After losing their parents in a fatal car accident, Penny (Mary Stuart Masterson) struggles to take care of her younger sister, Mary (Jena Malone), who has been diagnosed with an incurable disease. Penny has turned to prostitution to support them, but Mary is encouraged by the Professor (Delroy Lindo) to ignite a spark of hope in Penny’s life by creating an imagined world in the BOOK OF STARS. Mary secretly corresponds on her sister’s behalf with a prisoner (DB Sweeney), who is inspired by the book of poetry Penny wrote as a young girl. It is the love and trust between two sisters which ultimately pulls Penny back from the brink of self-destruction to embrace Mary’s legacy through the power of magic, light and hope.
